Artist Statement
I am a 23 year old textile artist living in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Overtime, I have developed a personal aesthetic featuring vibrant, densely stitched images of my family with light outlines and the use of applique adding depth and texture. My work is portraiture focused and influenced by my family’s life, making a comment on how they lived and by paying homage to the time that has past. I take my inspiration from archives of photographs; having always being intrigued by my family’s early life and the stories that have been passed down through generations.
My work begins as a photograph which is then meticulously hand drawn from concept and actualised using specialist designing software, before being embroidered using an embroidery machine and hand finished. I use techniques to build the surfaces and textures of my work, the complexity of each piece stemming from the composition itself and deliberate use of colour.
